Connecting Through Letters
for Friendsgiving

Why do we write letters to our incarcerated community? Prisons, jails, and other carceral settings are incredibly isolating; therefore we must reaffirm that no one should be left behind and forgotten. Especially during the holidays, deepening our connections and relationships and reminding people they are not alone is absolutely necessary!

This is why we host an annual Friendsgiving, where volunteers, staff, and community members come together to feast and write letters to our AOUON inside members. This year on November 17th, we wrote 1,200 letters to let recipients know that we are with them, we are sending encouragement, and we are wishing for a hopeful and joyful New Year. Along with writing, we had an amazing potluck that kept our energy in high spirits. We are so grateful for the dozens of people who showed up ready to write and to kindle a relationship with people here at the FAM Center and inside!

Thank You for Making
This Year Exceptional!

Thank you to our readers, volunteers, donors, and AOUON members for making 2023 an exceptional year! Throughout the ups and downs of the legislative cycle; the plethora of rallies, webinars, lobby days, and community outreach events, there is no doubt we could not have done it without your support.

As we move into the new year with new battles and challenges ahead—such as our fight to end involuntary servitude—we keep your encouragement and leadership in mind. Movements are not what they are without the people, so we hope you will continue to give support in the new year to end mass incarceration.

Bringing Social Justice to the Classrooms

What's a movement without our youth? Managing Director Tanisha Cannon and 23' Policy Fellow Alissa Moore had a wonderful opportunity to attend a class at Oakland High School on December 5th. We provided insights into the importance of careers in social justice, what we do, our challenges, and the impact on the community. Students will be writing a report on what they learned, which will help us to understand what younger generations look for in our movement work.

Celebrating A New Way of Life

We were so grateful and excited to attend a New Way of Life's 25th Anniversary Gala on December 3rd. It was an incredible night to honor our movement makers: Representative Maxine Waters, Sheika Walker, and Tatiana von Fürstenburg. Thank you to A New Way of Life and the founder Susan Burton for a wonderful celebration!

Press Conference on Inadequate Wages

LSPC and The One Fair Wage Coalition came together for a press conference on November 16th to detest the meager wage increase at CDCR (NCR 23-11). Legislators such as Senator Corteste and Senator Bradford also advocated for a living wage for incarcerated workers. We were highlighted in several publications, including the Davis Vanguard, LA Times, and KQED!

LA Times on Drug Criminalization

Our Policy Analyst Jeronimo Cuauhtemoc Aguilar was interviewed in an LA Times article on California Governor Gavin Newsom's newest legislation for 2024 on preventing illicit use and trafficking of Xylazine. Cuauhtemoc Aguilar stood firm in assuring that this must not funnel into incarceration and punitive measures to solve societal issues. Read the article here.

District Attorney Community Forum

We are proud of our 23' Policy Fellow Lawrence Cox for co-hosting a Know Your District Attorney Forum here in Oakland on November 25th! The community had the opportunity to engage with and ask questions to DA Pamela Price, and learn more about her roles and responsibilities!

Abolition, Indigeneity, and Palestine

Dorsey Nunn joined CURYJ for a Global Indigenous Solidarity with Palestine rally in Oakland on November 9th. Along with our ED Dorsey Nunn speaking, we heard from our Board of Directors and CURYJ ED George Galvis, the Chairwoman of the Muweka-Ohlone tribe Charlene C. Nijmeh. We also expressed solidarity with indigenous celebration and song. During his speech, Nunn explicitly reinstated how "we may not have common oppression, but we need common resistance."
