Power in Numbers at the California Capitol

Collective power is one of the most significant ways for empowering advocates and influencing legislation. As the 2023 legislative cycle ends, AOUON members are applying this tactic at the California Capitol to hold our representatives accountable!

On August 15th, LSPC and coalition members held a press conference and lobby day for SB 474 (Becker), a bill that would reduce canteen markups. To express how detrimental canteen markups were, organizers delivered FISH kits—a meager assortment of basic needs incarcerated people receive on their first day—to representative's offices.

On August 30th, AOUON held a lobby day for all of our co-sponsored bills! This was a public opportunity for AOUON members to join our Policy Fellows and convey to influential legislators why our bills must pass!

Finally, we joined the Underground Scholars on September 7th for a Day of Action for AB 280 (Holden), or the Mandela Act. This Act would require every jail, prison, and detention center to develop formal and public procedures for solitary confinement. These procedures would reduce the use of solitary confinement for a maximum of 15 days at one time and 45 days in six months.

In every action, we come together with community members, organizers, and activists. Along with visiting Sacramento, there were dozens of public comments and coalition meetings to determine next steps. The movement continues!

In Loving Memory of AOUON Member Tommy Acosta

We are saddened to announce that Tommy Acosta, a beloved member of AOUON Texas, passed away on September 1st. As AOUON Texas wrote, "Tommy was not just a name; he was an embodiment of resilience, hope, and unwavering dedication to the causes he held dear." During his lifelong dedication to social justice, he founded Big Homie Street Mentoring, where people with lived experiences empowered others with second chances. We are forever grateful for the impact he left and LSPC sends our condolences to his family.

Welcome Home Alicia!

We are incredibly happy and thrilled to welcome back Alicia after 24 years of incarceration at CDCR. We are grateful for the work and persistence from Policy Fellow Alissa Moore, Uncommon Law and The Uncuffed Project for supporting Alicia's return home. We are so excited for you!

September is incredibly important for representatives to hear your voice! Many of our bills will be voted on and possibly signed by the Governor. Read the updates below and contact your Representative to let them know your support!

  • AB 1186 (Bonta) Juvenile Restitution did get through Appropriations Committee, but is being held by the author and will be a two-year bill. So we'll have our chance to get the bill across the Senate floor and to the Governor's desk for a signature next legislative session.
  • SB 343 (Skinner) Child Support is out of the Appropriations Committee and passed yesterday on the Assembly floor. It is now on its way to the Governor's desk for signature!
  • ACA 8 (Wilson) The End Slavery in CA Act may be heard on the Assembly floor as early as this week! Folks should reach out to their Assemblymembers and ensure they are in support of ACA 8. We need 54 AYE votes get out of the Assembly!
  • AB 1306 (Carrillo) The HOME Act passed the Senate! It is now awaiting the Governor's Signature.
  • SB 474 (Becker) The BASICs Act passed in the legislature and is now waiting at the Governor's Desk for a signature!
  • AB 958 (Santiago) The Family Unity Bill unfortunately died in Appropriations Suspense. The bill would have restored the right to personal visits for incarcerated persons which—from 1975 to 1997— was a part of California law. Continue for updates though as we continue advocating for this basic right!

Find your elected representative here.

On every representative's website there is a contact page to let them know your thoughts. You can write on why you support a specific bill, as well as telling your story on why the bill is important to you.
