In a workshop at the Abolitions Conference at UCDC LSPC staff, Dr. Tanisha Cannon, John Cannon, and Paul Briley shared a powerful perspective on involuntary servitude and its inherent ties to slavery. They talked about important issues like the prison system, how it perpetuates racism and injustice, and strategies for abolishing it. They even discussed the need to get rid of the exception clause in the 13th Amendment in California, which has led to unfair practice. The Abolitions Conference aimed to bring together abolitionist voices from various institutions, fostering a collective understanding of what abolition means in today's context and how individuals can collaboratively strive towards a future where thriving and genuine freedom prevail. Most inmates in California prisons make less than 50 cents an hour. And some would argue that is the punishment for the crime. But California is among a minority of states that allows for “involuntary servitude” in prison, and a new bill equates that with modern day slavery. We’ll learn about the piece of legislation overhauling mandatory prison labor that will head to voters as a state constitutional amendment, if it passes and gets the governor’s signature. To better understand the involuntary servitude, Insight invited Dorsey Nunn, Executive Director of Legal Services for Prisoners with Children and Co-Founder of All of Us or None, to share his experience as someone formerly incarcerated, who used that experience to shape activism for criminal justice reform. Insight also invited the author of the bill ACA 8, State Assemblymember Lori D. Wilson (D-Suisun City), to explain how it would remove language from the California Constitution, which allows incarcerated individuals to be exposed to forced labor.

The Sierra snowmelt is threatening significant floods in a Central Valley county that houses a prison and massive agricultural industry, which are all at risk from the flood threat. The current levee system in Corcoran is not up to par, and unease is setting in as fears of flooding could bring intense impacts to communities. Joining us to discuss is Kurtis Alexander, a reporter for The San Francisco Chronicle, where he frequently writes about water, impacts of drought, threats to public lands and wildlife, and the nation’s widening rural-urban divide. Also joining us is Dorsey Nunn, the executive director of Legal Services for Prisoners with Children and founder of that organization’s policy advocacy arm All Of Us Or None.

The Communications Associate will be responsible for assisting the Communications Manager in all aspects of our comms duties, including work related to the website, electronic and print newsletter, social media presence, informational materials, media and public relations. The Comms Associate will plan and create narrative work (interviews, articles, graphics) to center formerly and currently incarcerated people and family members in our campaigns and outreach.
 
Salary Range: $65,000-70,000
